Drain Cleaning

A slow drain rarely fixes itself. Water pools a little longer each week. The gurgle gets louder. Then one morning the sink stops draining completely, and you are left with standing water and a mess to clean up. By the time a drain stops entirely, the clog has usually been building for weeks.

Kaleb’s Kustom Plumbing clears drains for homes and businesses across Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities. We find the blockage, remove it, and explain what caused it so you can avoid the same problem again. If your drains are slow or stopped, we can help.

What Actually Causes a Clog

Drain blockages do not appear overnight. Material collects on the inside of the pipe over time, narrowing the passage until water cannot get through.

In the kitchen, grease is the main culprit. It goes down as a liquid and hardens as it cools. Once it coats the pipe walls, food particles stick to it and the clog grows.

In the bathroom, hair is the problem. It tangles together, catches soap scum, and forms a mat that water cannot pass through.

In toilets, too much paper or a foreign object can create an immediate block. Older low-flow toilets can also struggle to move waste through pipes that were sized for higher volumes.

In floor drains and laundry lines, lint and detergent residue settle out of the water and build up along the pipe walls.

In main sewer lines, tree roots, scale, and years of accumulated waste create blockages that affect the entire building.

Some clogs sit close to the drain opening. Others are deep in the line. The location determines what equipment we need to clear them.

Signs You Should Call Before It Gets Worse

Drains usually give warning before they stop working entirely. Watch for these signals.

  • Water drains more slowly than it used to

  • The drain makes a gurgling sound after use

  • The same drain clogs repeatedly

  • More than one fixture in the building drains poorly

  • A bad smell comes from the drain even when it is not running

  • Water backs up in one fixture when you use another

Any of these means a clog is forming. Clearing it early is easier and less expensive than waiting for a full blockage.

How We Clear Drains

The method depends on the clog and its location.

Hand snake or auger. For clogs close to the drain opening — hair in a bathroom sink, food in a kitchen drain — a snake breaks through the blockage and pulls debris out. This is often the fastest fix for simple clogs.

Powered drain machine. For larger lines and main sewer clogs, we use a machine with a larger cutting head. This breaks through roots, scale, and heavy buildup that a hand snake cannot handle.

Hydro jetting. For grease, scale, and recurring blockages, hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the inside of the pipe. This removes buildup a snake cannot cut through and restores the pipe to its full diameter.

Camera inspection. When we need to see what is happening inside the line, we use a sewer camera inspection. This is especially helpful for recurring clogs or when we suspect root intrusion or pipe damage.

For sewer line issues that go beyond a simple clog, see our sewer line repair page.

Homes and Businesses We Serve

We clear drains in residential and commercial settings.

Residential drain cleaning covers kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, tubs, showers, toilets, laundry lines, and main sewer lines.

Commercial drain cleaning serves restaurants, offices, retail spaces, and multi-unit properties. Commercial kitchens and restrooms generate more volume and more variety of debris than residential systems. For commercial properties, our commercial plumbing page covers the full range of services.

What the Appointment Looks Like

When you call, we ask where the problem is and how long it has been happening. For simple clogs, we can often schedule service the same day or within a short window.

When we arrive, we assess the drain and choose the best method. A straightforward clog may take less than an hour. A main line clog or a recurring problem may take longer.

We explain what we found and what we did to clear it. If we see signs of a bigger issue — damaged pipe, root intrusion, or heavy scale — we tell you and discuss options.

When a Clog Is Actually a Broken Pipe

Sometimes a recurring clog is not a clog at all. If the drain line is cracked, collapsed, or heavily root-infested, clearing the blockage provides temporary relief, but the problem returns. The sewer camera inspection shows us what is actually happening inside the pipe.

If the line needs repair, we handle that through our sewer line repair service. If the problem is in the water supply lines instead of the drain lines, our water main repair page covers that work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does drain cleaning cost?

Cost depends on the type of clog, its location, and the method needed to clear it. Contact us to discuss your situation and get an estimate.

Do you offer emergency drain cleaning?

Yes. We offer emergency services for plumbing problems. Call (412) 694-3938 to discuss your situation.

Can I clear a clog with a store-bought drain cleaner?

Chemical drain cleaners can damage pipes, especially older ones. They also rarely clear the full blockage. Professional drain cleaning is safer and more effective.

What is the difference between snaking and hydro jetting?

Snaking uses a cable to break through a clog. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to scour the inside of the pipe and remove buildup. Snaking works for simple clogs. Hydro jetting works better for grease, scale, and recurring problems.

Why does my drain keep clogging?

Recurring clogs usually mean the pipe has buildup on the walls, a sagging section that traps debris, or root intrusion. A camera inspection shows what is happening inside the line.

Do you clean main sewer lines?

Yes. We clear main sewer clogs with drain machines and hydro jetting. We use camera inspection when needed to identify the cause.

Do you clean drains for businesses?

Yes. We serve commercial properties including restaurants, offices, and retail spaces. Our commercial plumbing page covers the full scope of commercial services.
