Hydro Jetting

A drain that clogs once is a nuisance. A drain that clogs every few months is a symptom. Something is narrowing the pipe from the inside, and clearing the blockage alone does not fix it. Hydro jetting addresses the buildup itself, not just the obstruction.

Kaleb’s Kustom Plumbing performs hydro jetting for homes and businesses across Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities. We clear the line, restore the pipe’s interior diameter, and confirm the results with a camera inspection. If your drains keep slowing down, this may be the solution.

The Kinds of Clogs Hydro Jetting Solves

Hydro jetting is effective against specific types of buildup. It is not the answer for every drain problem.

Grease. Kitchen drains collect grease from cooking. It hardens on the pipe walls and traps food particles. Snaking pushes through it. Hydro jetting removes it.

Scale and mineral deposits. Older pipes, especially cast iron and clay, build up mineral scale over years. The scale narrows the pipe. Hydro jetting scours it away.

Roots. Tree roots enter through small cracks and grow inside the line. Hydro jetting cuts them out and flushes the fragments away.

Sand, silt, and sediment. Floor drains and outdoor lines can collect grit that settles out of the water. Hydro jetting flushes it out.

Sludge and soap residue. Bathroom and laundry lines accumulate soap scum and detergent residue that standard snaking does not remove.

Recurring clogs from any cause. If the same line clogs repeatedly, the buildup is the problem. Hydro jetting addresses the buildup itself.

How Hydro Jetting Works

A hydro jetting machine uses a specialized hose with a high-pressure nozzle at the tip. The nozzle is fed into the drain line. Water is forced through it at high pressure and exits through small ports that spray backward and forward. The backward spray propels the hose deeper into the pipe. The forward spray scours the walls.

The difference from snaking is significant. A drain snake cuts a channel through a clog. The clog is still there, pushed to the sides. Hydro jetting removes the material entirely, restoring the pipe to its original diameter.

When Hydro Jetting Should Not Be Used

Hydro jetting is not safe for every pipe. Using it on a weakened line can cause more damage than the original problem.

Cracked or collapsed pipe. High-pressure water can widen existing cracks and cause failure. A camera inspection confirms the pipe’s condition first.

Brittle older pipe. Some very old clay and cast iron pipes cannot tolerate the pressure. We assess condition before choosing a method.

Bellied or offset sections. If the pipe has sagged or shifted, jetting can push water into areas that cannot drain properly.

Solid obstructions. If a hard object is stuck in the pipe, jetting can drive it deeper. Extraction or snaking is the better approach.

Known defects. If the line has documented damage, we discuss alternatives.

In every situation, we camera-inspect the line before jetting. A sewer camera inspection shows what is actually happening inside the pipe. That step determines whether hydro jetting is appropriate or if a different approach makes more sense.

What Happens During a Hydro Jetting Appointment

The process is methodical. The pressure is matched to the pipe material. Different materials have different tolerances.

First, we camera the line. We run a camera through to see what is causing the blockage and evaluate the pipe condition. This step is non-negotiable. We do not jet a pipe we have not inspected.

Next, we access the line. We use an existing cleanout or remove a fixture. For commercial properties, we locate the best access point.

Then we jet. We feed the hose into the line and jet at the appropriate pressure for the pipe material. Cast iron, clay, PVC, and other materials each have different safe pressure ranges. The nozzle type also varies based on what is being removed.

After jetting, we camera again. This confirms the pipe is clean and shows any damage that the jetting revealed or caused.

Finally, we review the results with you. If the camera shows a clean pipe, the drain is ready. If it shows a defect, we discuss options.

For simple clogs that do not involve buildup, standard drain cleaning may be the better service. If the line has a structural problem, sewer line repair may be needed.

Hydro Jetting for Restaurant and Commercial Kitchens

Kitchen drains are the most common commercial application for hydro jetting. Cooking grease accumulates in the line faster than any other type of buildup. Snaking pushes through it, but the grease remains on the pipe walls and catches food particles. The clog returns quickly.

Hydro jetting removes the grease completely. The pipe is restored to full diameter. Food particles and other debris no longer have a surface to cling to. For restaurants, this often means the difference between weekly clogs and a drain that runs smoothly for months.

Many commercial kitchens schedule hydro jetting as part of a preventive maintenance plan. Regular jetting prevents emergency clogs during service hours. See our commercial plumbing page for the full scope of services we offer for businesses.

Hydro Jetting and Tree Roots

Tree roots are one of the most persistent causes of residential drain problems. Roots enter through tiny cracks at pipe joints, then grow and thicken inside the line. They catch paper, waste, and debris, creating clogs that return.

Hydro jetting cuts roots out and flushes the fragments away. After jetting, we may recommend a root treatment that slows regrowth. If the camera shows the pipe is significantly damaged, sewer line repair may be necessary. The camera inspection after jetting confirms the pipe’s condition.

How Often Hydro Jetting Is Needed

There is no fixed schedule. It depends on what the pipe carries and how much buildup accumulates.

Residential kitchen lines may benefit from jetting every 12 to 24 months if grease is a recurring problem.

Bathroom and laundry lines usually need jetting less often. Standard cleaning is often sufficient if the pipe is not heavily scaled.

Commercial kitchen lines may need jetting quarterly or more often depending on volume and grease production.

Older homes with cast iron or clay pipe benefit from periodic jetting to manage scale and reduce the risk of full blockage.

We assess each situation individually. After jetting, the camera inspection shows how clean the pipe is. That tells us how quickly buildup is likely to return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hydro jetting safe for my pipes?

Hydro jetting is safe when the pipe is in good condition and the pressure is matched to the material. We always camera-inspect the line first to confirm it is appropriate.

How is hydro jetting different from snaking?

Snaking cuts a channel through a clog. Hydro jetting scours the inside of the pipe and removes buildup, restoring the full diameter.

How often should hydro jetting be done?

It depends on the pipe and what it carries. Residential kitchen lines may need jetting every 12 to 24 months. Commercial kitchens often need it quarterly or more.

Can hydro jetting remove tree roots?

Yes. Hydro jetting cuts roots out and flushes the fragments away. We may also apply a root treatment to slow regrowth.

Will hydro jetting damage my pipes?

Not if it is done correctly. The pressure is matched to the pipe material and the pipe is inspected first to confirm it is safe for the process.

Do you offer hydro jetting for commercial properties?

Yes. Commercial hydro jetting is part of our commercial plumbing services. Restaurants and other businesses often schedule it as preventive maintenance.
